Legacy of Tahera and Idris Farooqui

Mrs. Tahera Farooqui (1932-2019) was born into a modest zamindar family in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Together with her husband, Haji Muhammed Idris Farooqui (1925-1981), she raised ten children and forty grandchildren who now lead in medicine, technology, education, and business across India, the United States, the Middle East, and New Zealand.

Despite her limited formal education, Mrs. Farooqui was inspired by the principles of her Muslim faith and the communal harmony she experienced in her village. She was a fervent believer that education is the gateway to opportunity and no sacrifice was too great for the education of her children. Known as "Amma" she lived by the ethos "much is expected of those to whom much has been given," dedicating her life to service and teaching. Mrs. Farooqui's legacy of bold vision and profound kindness continues to inspire long after her passing in 2019.

About the Farooqui family

Originating from the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, India, the Farooqui family is driven by deep-seated values of altruism, learned at the knees of their parents.
The strong roots of the family are descended from the Shaikh Zamindar community.. The family’s principles are clearly reflected in Allama Iqbal’s verse:
"Ho mera kaam ghareebon ki himayat karna,
Dard mandoon se, zaeefon se mohabbat karna."
“My mission is to support the poor, To love those who are in pain, And to show compassion to the weak.”
